Integrated Dishwasher : Out of Sight !

An integrated dishwasher is truly a magical piece of equipment, not only does it clean dishes supremely well but it can also vanish before your eyes.

So, how does the magician perform the trick? That's easy - magic!
However, the question of how to hide a dishwasher in a kitchen is simply answered by hiding it behind a cabinet door. The front of an integrated dishwasher is designed so that a standard sized cabinetry door can be attached to it yet allow the dishwasher to still open and operate normally. There are various different ways to attach the cabinet door but all perform the same task. You end up with something that appears to be just another cabinet under your kitchen work surface, yet it hides a full sized dishwasher.

Apart from the ability to camoflage itself, there isn't any other differences when compared to other types of dishwasher. The concept of hiding the dishwasher is quite new so the typical models which offer this feature will generally be rich in many other features to also make cleaning dishes more effective.

Now you See it, Now you Don't !

There are 2 types of integrated dishwasher - fully integrated and semi-integrated.

Fully Integrated Dishwashers are designed so that the entire front of the dishwasher is a single door that runs from top to bottom. This means that there are no controls or indicators on the front of the door that would hinder the attachment of the cabinet panel. Instead, the normal dishwasher controls are either located just inside the door or along the top edge of the door. Therefore you can still access and operate the settings of the dishwasher even though the entire front of the appliance is covered up.

Semi-integrated Dishwashers are slightly different in their design. They still allow for a cabinet door to be attached onto the front of the dishwasher. However, the cabinet door and the dishwasher door do not extend to the top of the appliance. This means that the top section of the dishwasher is exposed and not covered up by the cabinetry. The exposed section looks just like any other normal dishwasher and displays the controls and indicators that you would expect to see. Although the cabinet front does not totally cover the facade of the dishwasher, it still gives a very pleasing affect in the kitchen and does fool the eye into 'not seeing' the appliance.

Much More than Meets the Eye !

The smooth clean appearance of an integrated dishwasher can be attractive even if you are not planning to cover it with a cabinet door. The Stainless Steel Dishwashers in particluar, are very pleasing to look at with just a single panel on the front with no visible controls.

It may be stating the obvious but with a fully integrated dishwasher you have nothing to look at that can tell you anything about the current wash cycle once it is in progress. A lot of dishwashers with visible controls have a countdown indicator that gives you an idea of how long you have to wait if you want to start another load. Most models though, will allow you to open the door just enough to see the internal control panel and simply pause the wash.

For families with children, the idea of having the controls totally hidden in the fully integrated versions can be looked at as an additional child safety feature.

If you are remodeling your whole kitchen then the cost of an additional door for your dishwasher isn't really a big deal. However, for those simply adding a dishwasher, you will have to be able to buy just one more door. This might be tricky if you don't know exactly where the original kitchen cabinets were bought. If you are buying a door for a semi-integrated dishwasher then this wll be a non-standard size and can be more of a challenge.
